ReDefining Economic Development NYC
Principles for a Progressive Blueprint Series, April to September 2006

New York City's organized, progressive community, including labor unions, community-based housing developers, job training providers, faith-based organizations, economic, immigrant and environmental justice organizations, credit unions, academics and activists, are working together to create a shared vision for the city's growth.

Since 2004, a diverse range of organizations from throughout New York City have participated in a series of meetings and workshops coordinated by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, Jobs for Justice NYC and Pratt Center for Community Development under the banner of Redefining Economic Development-NYC.

Six educational sessions, organized by the Redefining Economic Development participants, disseminated information on jobs and the economy, affordable housing, environmental sustainability and justice, financial services, workforce training and government processes. In addition to providing issue-by-issue education for the progressive community, these workshops provided a forum to brainstorm about shared values and to grapple with tensions that can arise in the implementation of otherwise overlapping agendas.

Some 150 people from over 100 organizations participated in one of these six workshops designed to share information across traditional issue 'silos' and develop a set of common principles to guide progressive economic development in New York City. Workshop participants agreed on the following principles for economic development:

  • Create good jobs for a strong economy
  • Make and keep housing affordable
  • Distribute environmental benefits and burdens fairly and make the city greener
  • Strengthen neighborhood character and diversity
  • Genuinely involve communities, promote transparency and tie public actions to public benefits
