AIDS Housing and Community Center
East New York, Brooklyn

East New York Urban Youth Corps, a locally based developer, and Housing Works, an established AIDS services and advocacy organization, co-sponsored the construction of a new low-rise community center which incorporates a 12,000 square foot, state licensed day healthcare facility and 32 efficiency apartments. The 34,000 square foot facility, completed in 1998, provides meals, primary health care, and substance abuse treatment services to residents and 60 day clients living with AIDS or HIV.

The center was designed to complement the neighboring low-rise manufacturing and residential buildings.

The open plan allows for greater visibility and penetration of sunlight from the south facing rear yard. Use of the strong architectural forms and materials like quarry tile help to create a playful yet durable environment for the clients.
